Set in Munich in the 1820s, 'Xerxes' trace the career of aspiring young architect August Ettlinger. Joining a salon of aristocrats and intellectuals, he falls under the influence of von Wolgast, who offers him use of his superb library. At the same time Ettlinger falls in love with Helene, one of their charmed circle. As passions intensify, Wolgast's become increasingly sinister and unclear.
