New York‚ 1943: Aspiring actress Rosie Winter has been marooned in the city all throughout the War‚ trying desperately to win a few parts here and there. Her boyfriend‚ Jack‚ has shipped out the Pacific Front‚ never to be heard from again‚ and the plucky single girl has been living with her best friend‚ Jayne‚ in an all-female boarding house.
So when Rosie and Jayne get an offer to travel to the the steamy South Pacific to perform in U.S.O. shows‚ they leap at the chance. After all‚ maybe they'll uncover what happened to Jack AND have a little fun at the U.S. government's expense? Of course‚ the arrangement comes at a cost: their reporter friend‚ Harriet‚ and her fiancé‚ are hard at work on an expose of the U.S.O. and they need Jayne and Rosie's help uncovering what's going on in the organization's newest camp in the South Pacific‚ where the U.S.O. workers appear to be living higher on the hog than they should be.
While Rosie and Jayne throw themselves into their new job with gusto‚ finally feeling like they're doing something to help the war effort‚ tragedy strikes: a famous Hollywood actress who's been helping out with the U.S.O. is killed by enemy gunfire--or could it have been something far more sinister?
Amidst the backdrop of desperate soldiers‚ beautiful singing girls‚ an escalating war‚ and racial tensions‚ Rosie and Jayne tackle the biggest case of their lives‚ as talented author Kathryn Miller Haines brings the drama and heartbreak of the War Abroad grippingly to life.
