In the lush countryside of West Cornwall lies the small fishing village of Coverack and the warm welcome of the Paris Hotel. It is an appropriate name because the owner, Maizie Blackacre, finds her life changed forever by the arrival of a young Frenchman.The Second World War has brought its own special turmoil to Coverack. When Maizie's husband Sam joins the Merchant Navy, she is left to cope with the hotel's dwindling trade and two young evacuees. Then the arrival of Christian Le Gall, a French lieutenant recuperating from a war wound, lightens all their lives.When Christian reports back for duty, Maizie is surprised at how sad she is to see him go - and how much she dreads the return of hard drinking Sam.
