Mitch Davies' life is simple. All he wants to do is surf. Most mornings are spent sitting beyond the break, on his board with his grandpa, Paul, a longboard champion of the 60s. After school, the afternoons are spent in the back shed watching Paul shape surfboards for the locals. The future seems so clear, Mitch wants to be a surfing champion like Paul. But in Mitch's 17th year, Paul is diagnosed with leukemia and what once seemed certain becomes unclear.
Mitch finds himself watching Diana, a girl with perfect balance. She is a loner with one direction, to get into the London School of Ballet. Her harsh self-discipline intrigues and inspires Mitch and allows him to begin the conscious pursuit of his dream. But Paul is dying and one white lie is all that's needed to keep Mitch focused on the championships.
This is the story of a boy whose grandfather gently guides him into a victory that will shape him into a man.
