A busy doctor's surgery is the scene of both triumphs and tragedies - all human life is there. And in the King Street practice the doctors, as well as the patients, have their share of problems.
Simon Gatward is a good doctor in the old-fashioned sense - he believes in making time for his patients, even if that means he's always running late. It is totally in character for him to take a sympathetic interest in a young man terminally ill with the HIV virus. But prejudices can run deep in a country village, and tongues quickly start wagging.
Idle gossip is one thing. But when it starts to have an effect on the smooth working of the surgery, the Senior Partner decides to take a stand. And Simon is faced with an impossible choice: leave the partnership or abandon his patient.
