Kirby Wayland, 27, is a cop. Late one night, off duty, he sees a stray dog along the highway--a Belgian sheepdog. The dog wears no collar so Kirby takes it home for the night.
The dog sits staring at him the whole evening. Staring intently. Restlessly, Kirby ends up on the back porch where he hears noise in the house next door ... and sees through a window a man strangling the woman who lives there! Kirby makes a spectacular entrance.
Later, after the police have come and gone, he begins to wonder about the dog.
At the animal shelter next day, a scan reveals the dog has no ID chip and Kirby decides to keep it. Arriving back on duty, he surprises his chief--and himself--by asking for a couple of months of unpaid leave. He's going away. When a friend asks where and why, Kirby says, 'I don't know ... I think that's up to the dog.'
This is worrying behaviour for a cop.
