John Berger's 'Ways Of Seeing' was first published in 1972. It has since become a seminal work, one which attempted to understand how we look at visual images and how they shape us. In 'Ways Of Hearing' Ben Thompson does a similar thing for music - attempting to get at the nitty-gritty of music's power to transform those who listen to it and those who make it, by, for instance, exploring the role of music in the mediums of radio, TV, film, literature and video, looking at the relationship between music and environment, and how we actually listen to music, and featuring numerous interviews with (mainly contemporary) musicians and DJs, from Brian Eno, John Peel and Neil Young, to Lee Perry the Beastie Boys and Mercury Rev.
