Designing city houses for private clients constituted the major part of Wayne Gillespie's professional life. His aim always was to build houses with pure, clean lines, combining the best design features of classical villas with modern technology to provide an optimal environment for living.
Within the confines of the urban streetscape, his talent for maximising light and space inside the boundaries of even the smallest site was especially valuable. Simplicity was a central tenet of his philosophy: "A building should be designed in an honest way without resorting to featurism. It should be restrained and should not compete with the surrounding buildings in an egotistical or vulgar manner," he said.
This book celebrates Gillespie's life and work, charting his influences and style. The houses have been grouped into City, Country and Beach, and each house carries the Gillespie philosophy.
