The correspondence between Van Gogh and Bernard covers the period 1877-89 and is largely devoted to the discussion of van Gogh's problems and ambitions concerning painting.
The publication consists of the following: introduction; transcriptions and translations; reproductions of the letters on an uncoated stock (approximately 88 illustrations); 4-colour reproductions of approximately 120 works discussed in the letters; commentary placing each letter in context of relevant events between letters; annotations and discussions of the content of the letters; and back matter (appendix, list of illustrations, three indices, bibliography, and photographic credits). Nineteen of the letters are at the Morgan Library and three are at other locations. One letter by Vincent van Gogh to Paul Gauguin will be reproduced in an Appendix.
