Hanging in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, "Butterflies and Poppies" was painted in 1890 during what is considered the finest period of the artist's remarkable career. Inspired by Van Gogh's studies of Japanese prints, the work now graces the cover of this lovely little notebook. Featuring 64 blank pages, it's a great way to store phone numbers and appointments and doubles as a pocket-sized sketchbook. Although his works fetch record-breaking prices at modern auctions, Vincent van Gogh (1853?90) sold only a single painting in his lifetime. The artist labored in obscurity, creating hundreds of paintings and more than 1,000 drawings in the 10-year period before his suicide. His posthumous fame grew quickly, and his influence on Expressionism, Fauvism, and other branches of modern art is beyond calculation.
