Schtettel, mittel-Europe: schoolteacher's wife Anna Mueller leads a young girl to the castle of her lover, Count Mitterhouse, where the vampire Count murders the girl. Professor Mueller gathers together a horde of villagers and, at the castle, they overcome the demon. Impaled upon a sharpened sake, he curses them all: 'Your children will die to give me back my life!' The villagers blow up the castle, but Anna hauls her dying lover's body to the crypt. he instructs her to seek out his cousin.
Fifteen years pass. Disease runs rife and the village is quarantined, but a convoy led by a gypsy woman manages to cross the blockade. This is the Circus of Nights, and Schtettel's children thrill to the performers' antics. The gypsy woman - actually Anna - has the castle crypt uncovered; feline acrobat Emit, it transpires, is the Count's kinsman. They have come to fulfil Mitterhouse's bloody vow...
