The Classic Account of One Woman's Epic and Eccentric Journey in the 1890s
This is the classic account of one woman's epic and eccentric journey up the Congo at the end of the 19th century. Born in 1862, Mary Kingsley was the daughter of a traveller/explorer. Following her parents' death within six weeks of each other in 1892, Mary was freed to follow in her father's footsteps. She made two trips in the 1890s and her lively and witty account was an immediate best-seller when first published in 1897. She volunteered as a nurse in the Boer War but caught fever there and died in 1900.
Her story of hacking, marching, and climbing her way through "the dark continent" is an absorbing record of previously unexplored terrain as observed by a truly remarkable woman.
