Rhodesia in the late 1930s is a country firmly in the control of the colonial power that has ruled it for decades - men like Commander Harry Chance, who owns thousands of acres made profitable by countless black workers. Aggravating the simmering tension of the majority under the thumb of the ruling few is the awareness that war on an epic scale is almost certainly imminent.
Thrown into this potent mix is a young white woman, Briony West, daughter of a missionary who left Africa in ignominy and died, cut off from his faith. To Briony, Rhodesia is an exotic and exciting land and in her naivety she believes she can set right the wrong done by her father when he broke society's rules.
Soon a yielding pawn in Harry's games and plans, Briony finds herself caught up in a ruthless drama which seems to be headed inexorably for tragedy.
