When Rochelle Dubois, the neglected child of farm workers on the island of Jersey, is orphaned, she is adopted by her parents' employer Charles Laurient, and life for the young girl becomes idyllic.
Together, she and Charles work to rear the legendary orchid, Pure Madonna, until war breaks out and the Channel Islands are occupied by the Nazis. In the struggle for survival which follows, Rochelle is left to do her best for herself and her precious seedlings. But an American airman on his way to Jersey will change everything...
