Art in our time demonstrates by its vital diversity that being never comes down to one or two factors but grows limited only by the demands and capacities of the creative imagination. This art in its very essence is pluralistic in the sense that the best in one form of expression is not exclusive of the best in another. The esteemed former MOMA curator, Robert Storr, has been at work (110 years after the first Biennale) preparing the exhibition which defines the new century.
A main focus of the current biennale is realising that the future of art lies in a growing dialogue between the new nations of the developing world and the old cultures of the developed world. This dialogue is changing the face of culture as well as the very nature of art. One hundred artists have been selected from all over the world and include for the first time in the history of the biennale artists from emerging nations such as India, Turkey and Nigeria which will have their own pavilion. Tracy Emin is the artist selected to represent Great Britain.
The essays featured in these volumes provide invaluable aid to both contemporary art specialists as well as to the public at large in placing the new trends in art into context and understanding the up-and-coming artists and the new directions of art.
