"There you go, camel, with your lipstick . . . smch, smch, smch," (making kissing noises). For a while Julia continues to paint quietly.
Suddenly she exclaims, "It's got another head! Ah, God, it's got ANOTHER head!"
She works on, humming softly.
"They're footprintses . . ." (breaking into sing-song) "and they're different colours. And it's it's two heads. And it's it's lipstick on. And it's it's IM!"
Putting her brush triumphantly back in the paint pot, she turns to face the room.
This delightful and insightful study of children's art and how they go about it is based on Jenny Svendsen's 25 years of teaching art to young children. It is aimed at parents, early childhood and art teachers, psychologists, art therapists and art students.
The book includes over a hundred examples from Jenny's huge collection of children's paintings and drawings in colour and black and white, accompanied by what the children said about their work and Jenny Svendsen's comments on their approach, methods and the finished work, with ideas and observations about reaching practice and child management. Its primary aim is to share the sheer pleasure of viewing young children's artwork.
