Broadway veteran Michael Cerveris won a Tony as Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Fun Home , which also brought creator Lisa Kron a Tony for Best Book of a Musical and co-creator Jeanine Tesori a Tony for Best Original Score. Kelli O'Hara won a Tony for Best Actress in a Musical for The King and I after 15 years and five nominations.
Off-Broadway Hamilton began its ascent to Broadway and into musical theater history at the Public, and a stripped-down Into the Woods earned rave reviews even as a multitude of stage and screen versions vied for attention a production that began regionally at the McCarter Theatre Center.
