"My mother knew a man during the war. Theirs was a love story, and like any good love story, it left blood on the floor and zvreckage in its zvake."
This entirely involving, gripping novel is set during the Second World War (and in its long wake), and its plot pivots around the real-life assassination of the 'Butcher of Prague', Nazi overlord and Hitler favourite Reinhard Heydrich, killed by a small team of Czech resistance fighters airlifted in by the RAF in 1942. In hysterical reprisal for the assassination of this most senior Nazi, Hitler had entire Czech towns obliterated from the map forever, and initiated a manhunt in Prague whose cat-and-mouse game is the backdrop to this novel.
