"Louis baker gets out of jail today and he's going to kill us both . . ."
That's the last message Rusty Ingraham, a retired prosecutor, gives Dismas Hardy. A day later all Hardy can find of Ingraham is a trail of blood leading into the canal where his friend moored his houseboat, and Rusty's girlfriend, dead. To Hardy, a former detective, it looks like a chillingly clear-cut case of a threat fulfilled. And now he's waiting his own turn.
To Hardy's fury, the police claim they don't have sufficient grounds to go into the tenements and arrest the violent Baker. Now it's up to Hardy to find more compelling evidence to link Baker to the crime. But gradually he begins to understand there's more going on than he first suspected, including the activities of a loan shark whose collection of interest, "the vig", is already the key to one killing - and to a second Hardy would do anything to avoid. His own.
