For over fifteen years Richard Diran has been travelling in South East Asia in pursuit of the world's finest rubies, sapphires and jade. During his many visits to Burma he became fascinated by the myriad tribal groups and, discovering that many of them were living a style of life unchanged for centuries, he determined to record them, their rich costumes and way of life, before they vanished forever. This extraordinary book is the result of that obsession.
His task of recording the tribes, many of them suspicious and frightened of foreigners, was ardous and also dangerous, in the face of almost constant guerrilla warfare, and it took many years. The resulting photographs are a testimony not only to his skill and determination but to the survival of the tribes themselves in the face of an alien and politically unstable world.
