In the small town of Potter's Field, Wyoming, where the police chief is a man called Slaughter, strange things are happening . . . there's a dead hitchhiker on the road, a hit-and-run victim presumably - but how did his body get so mutilated? The coroner, due to conduct the autopsy, dies suddenly of a heart attack - is this coincidence? And, most sinister of all, how could the stranger's corpse just disappear from the town morgue?
