In the course of her work, a young scientist, Dr Jeannie Ferrami, comes across two young men who appear to be identical twins: Steve a law student, and Dennis a convicted murderer. Yet they were born on different days, to different mothers, hundreds of miles apart.
As Jeannie investigates this puzzle shadowy forces endanger her job. Then Steve is accused of a terrible crime which he swears he did not commit, and as Jeannie falls in love with him she has to ask herself how she can be sure he is different from his evil twin brother.
When her life is threatened she realises this is much more than just a scientific problem and soon Jeannie and Steve find themselves in more trouble than they could ever have imagined.
