Dr Peter Wilson has got enough on his plate worrying about the mathematics of giant locust swarms. He's in Atlanta to give a crucial lecture at a scientific conference, but his data has been mysteriously sabotaged. And then there are the rumours of a breathtaking conspiracy involving international pharmaceutical companies . . .
So the last thing he needs is for one of the world's most famous - and famously difficult - women, the brilliant cellist Jocasta Manhattan, to crash back into his life, pleading for help. She's got herself involved with the charismatic Nigerian politician and tribal chief Jack Ngale, a man obsessed with the Inge Simba - a priceless tribal treasure lost by one of his ancestors - and now he seems to think Jocasta is the key to its reappearance.
Which would be distracting enough, as far as Peter is concerned, without somebody trying, in a rather spectacular manner, to kill him . . .
