Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper - despite the displeasure of Achilles's mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

One of the most beautiful books I've ever read, and the most heartbreaking. Madeline Miller has a gift for bringing her heroes to life, with all of their flaws and faults, and making you fall in love with every part of them. The epic tale of the fall of Troy is given the same treatment here, as Miller reframes it through the love story of the famed Achilles and Patroclus. A must read for fans of classical history, I also highly recommend it to those who mainly stick to romance. - Rebecca (QBD)

A wonderful balance between ancient Greek mythology and contemporary retelling, Miller introduces readers to Achilles and Patroclus, two princes that are different in every way. While they navigate hardships and political intrigues, a bond strengthens between them that cannot be broken, even in death. - Julia (QBD)

We all know the story of the hero Achilles, named greatest of the Greeks at Troy, who was brought low by the infamous weakness in his heel - or we think we do. Madeline Miller revisits this timeless story with fresh eyes, with a focus on Achilles greatest friend and lover, Patroclus. The story develops the romance between the two, showing how they overcome all obsticles until at last fate itself has to intervene to tear them apart. By turns funny, beautiful and utterly heartbreaking, this book held me captivated until the very last, soul-wrenching page. - Rebecca (QBD)
