In the wake of the flood which submerged Florence in 1966, Margot Harrington, a young American book restorer, finds a unique 16th century volume of erotic engravings and sonnets in a convent library. Enlisted by the abbess to sell it secretly, she shares her sense of mission and then her bed with a middle-aged, married Italian, and beings to discover her strengths as a woman.
