It is called the Virginia Class, the newest addition to the American Navy's submarine fleet. Just out of dry-dock, the new sub has little time to work out its bugs before it is called to action. An airliner has been shot down in Asia, and intelligence sources indicate that the origin of the attack was a missile launched from a submarine. The only explanation - al Qaida now has a navy of their own, a navy supported secretly by the Chinese government. Realizing the importance of eliminating the threat ASAP, Captain Tom Garrett drives his sub into dangerous waters, knowing that he must accomplish an almost impossible task - eliminate the threat without starting a war.
