Dr. Rae Duprae is an OB/GYN with more than a passion for her work. Driven by the searing childhood memory of her own mother's death in the back of an ambulance, she is possessed by an all-consuming mission to "save the life" of the women and babies she encounters daily at Berkeley Hills Hospital.
Slated to become the first black woman chair of the prestigious hospital's nationally ranked obstetrics department, she is suddenly derailed by a series of "bad baby" cases that seem to be emanating from the politically sensitive birth center across the street - a center run by her ex-lover and nemesis, Bo Michaels, that threatens the very existence of her department, and, it seems, her career. When Rae sets out to uncover the truth, she sets off a firestorm of resistance from all sides. The killer is clearly no stranger to Berkeley Hills Hospital... but in the politically charged atmosphere of a changing health care system and intense competition, who can be trusted? And to make matters worse, Rae finds herself falling for the new member of the rival cardiac department - a doctor with uncertain allegiances.
