It is April 1903, and professional racing yacht skipper Charlie Webb has been summoned by the Duke of Leominster to a secret meeting with a mysterious gentleman yachtsman calling himself Carruthers.
For a thousand pounds he's to take the smack yacht "Gloria" into the Frisian Islands, where the treacherous tides and shifting sandbanks supposedly hide a Napoleonic wreck loaded with bullion. But dukes, as Charlie knows, are rarely to be trusted, and the enigmatic Carruthers seems rather more concerned with the Kaiser's brand-new navy than any wreck.
But it's only once Charlie, his made Samson Gidney and the violent and secretive "salvage expert" Captain Dacre are well within the maze of the islands themselves that the true nature of their mission becomes frighteningly apparent.
