An astonishingly elaborate seaborne fantasy.
A ship sets out from New Crobuzon towards a new colony, with a hold full of criminals for use as slave labour. It passes over inshore waters ruled by a race of human-lobster centaurs, is pursued by a gang of grindylow (a kind of demonic mermen), is captured by a floating pirate city, tugged across the sea by a giant beast.
As the heroine, Bellis, finds her way around it, the floating city is searching for the Fractured Land, where a chasm extends down through the sea and into the void beyond . . . And all the time pursued by the relentless grindylow.
This is a fantastical voyage of exploration and discovery, of extravagant marine adventures and awesome sea-monsters.
