'This Is My Surfboard' is the Sandman's first novella. In it he captures his fourth most humiliating experience (at that time). It's the story of a frightened teenager cowering in the shadow of the monsters who inhabit Australian beach culture.
'Observations From A Moving Vehicle' is a journal which sees the teenager on a traumatic summer holiday "up the coast". It's like a road book, but the car is slow, so instead of arriving somewhere quickly it takes ages to get there. In 'Pleasant Avenue' the teenager has moved on to the brink of his 21st birthday. It is the Sandman's rite of passage.
Through the three books we wander through relationships, dreams, food, toilets, sex, sexuality, real estate, striptease, self-obsession, jealousy, gambling, assault, mental decay, an abundance of similes and treason - and yet, nothing seems to happen.
