It all begins with the theft of Tessa Walcott's underpants and a river that changes course overnight...
When Imelda Richardson leaves the tiny Jamaican village of Watersgate, armed only with one small suitcase, she is one of a throng of young Jamaicans fleeing the island after the devastating hurricane of 1974. Like them, Imelda's journey takes her to England, to the home of ganja-growing Purletta and into the arms of fake Northerner Ozzie. But when her mother dies, Imelda chooses Jamaica over England and returns home to a village still dominated by the Evangelical church and the booming voice of Pastor Braithwaite. When her friend Tessa's underpants are stolen, Imelda and Tessa take matters into their own hands by setting up a neighbourhood watch. But they haven't counted on the crusading zeal of Pastor Braithwaite. As a Pentecostal fervour grips the village, the tensions between the old order and the new come to a feverish head.
