The Ancient Origin of Holy and Mystical Sites
This book stems from many years research and uses examples from all over the world, examines the many factors that helped ancient peoples consider specific polices to be holy, special or powerful. It commences with natural locations and landscapes, explains why the people considered them holy and shows how these concepts, globally, developed into the megalithic structures and finally the classical temple where our ancestors believed their own spirits or their gods dwelt.
Examples range in the first section from prehistoric and Celtic Western Europe, the Americas, Aboriginal Australia, etc. From the second section where settlement and agriculture changed the idea of sacred landscape to actual building, examples of megalithic work from Scandinavia, Britain the Mediterranean and pre-Columbian America. It ends its story with a look at the actual temples from nearly all these same areas, showing them to be the natural progression of the sacred place.
