Whenever Nona rides her old bicycle, the neighborhood brats tease her. She dreams of owning the spiffy, sparkling "Red Racer" in the hardware store window. But Nona's parents don't see why they should buy her a new bike when she already has a perfectly good one. Nona just can't get the Red Racer out of her mind. Gradually, a wicked thought takes over: If she somehow got rid of her old bike, her parents would have to buy her the Red Racer. . . . She tries pushing her bike off a cliff and dumping it into a lake, but it always manages to find its way back to her. Finally, she leaves it on the railroad tracks. But her parents have a surprise for her that changes everything.
