Nisha Farsight is a young, untrained fire magician in the beguiling city of Quentaris. In a long, hot summer, the city is troubled by a plague of earthquakes, and Nisha is troubled by her erratic powers. While trying to harness them, she stumbles into the city beneath the city - Lower Quentaris.
Lower Quentaris is a maze of dwellings and streets under Quentaris itself, a home for the lost, the unwanted and the mysterious. Here, Nisha offers to help a quartet of mysterious strangers and embarks on a series of adventures in the underground world. She finds that events of five hundred years ago are resounding down the ages and threaten the existence of Quentaris today.
Helped by her good friend Tal the minstrel, she suffers fire and cold, endures trials of control and will, and learns that art and life give meaning to each other.
