Jo watches her mother's ritual of bereavement over the death of her second husband. Jo's father had been the first husband - a man who published books on a home printing press and drove trucks by night to fund the enterprise. Jo is torn between the father who raised and protected her and the ravishing mother who abandoned her for twelve years but whom now needs her help - and rescue from a tomb of pollen and despair.
