When Ruby, an artist, trespasses into the lush garden at Oakstead, it is so beautiful that she can't resist staying a while. She is found asleep by Ben, the present owner of the eighteenth century house and its stunning grounds. Feeling strangely yet comfortingly at home in each other's presence, the pair fall easily and happily in love, and soon announce their engagement. As a result of some not entirely welcome academic interest in Oakstead, Ben, encouraged by Ruby, embarks on a research project of his own. Soon, he is so busy that he does not notice Ruby's growing sense of unease regarding the marriage preparations, nor the strained atmosphere between her and his lodger, Charlie. Ruby might feel uncomfortable with Charlie, but when she meets Ben's gardener, George, she feels a flash of recognition and, despite her better judgement, becomes involved in an intense love triangle. Only it seems that the house and garden have their own secrets. As Ben finds out more about the original owner, the notorious Henry Faulkes, and the mysterious temple on the lake, it becomes apparent that history may be repeating itself, and that Ruby is not the only person hiding something at Oakstead...
