From a very early age Brian Mayfield Smith felt a particular empathy with horses.
After running away from home, Brian began training horses in the bush, and with increasing success, he headed slowly southward. His triumphs through Cairns and Brisbane saw him on to Sydney, where he won the Trainers' Premiership. But then Brian's story took another remarkable turn. He gave up training in order to go to Africa to devote himself to helping save endangered animal species. It was a passionate and quixotic gesture, and one that led to many adventures and heartaches.
Brian eventually returned and is now training horses again with noted success. Brian's life is the tale of a unique Aussie outsider - a determined, solitary man who has never flinched from following his heart.
