Children born with abilities as a direct result of the catastrophes of the past are now being hunted and shipped to a place called Obernewtyn. Elspeth Gordie is such a child and she must learn to keep her abilities hidden while also discovering her future. A great first series as an introduction to dystopian novels, with a touch of fantasy. Highly rated, highly recommended. - Hayley (QBD)

I'd been looking forward to reading this book for so long and it did not disappoint! Set in a post apocalyptic world, the story follows Elspeth Gordie - a “misfit” with powerful mental abilities born into a world where such people are hunted down and killed by the totalitarian Council. The story has brutal history, a well thought out world, talking animal characters, a likeable heroine and creepy, intriguing mystery. Although the plot was still quite simple, there is a lot of great material to be expanded on for the next books. A fun and easy read that will still have you on the edge of your seat! - Georgia (QBD)

Untitled
Born with enhanced mental powers, Elspeth Gordie's life has always been difficult. The oppressive nature of the ruling council makes it impossible not to live in fear for being different. People like her, misfits, are sent away to labour camps or burned because of these differences. This all changes when Elspeth is sent to the mysterious institution of Obernewtyn. Facing impossible odds and finding new people with the same set of skills, Elspeth finds herself amidst a plot for destruction, and she is the only hope of stopping it... This series is perfect for people who like unique styles of fantasy, and is something that will stay with you long after finishing the series. - Zoe (QBD)

Obernewtyn
If you loved the Hunger Games or Divergent you will LOVE this series. Set in a post-apocolyptic world, life is harsh and the planet is barely habitable. Some people have developed powers and abilities, these 'misfits' must live in secret and have the power to change the world. Reviewed by 30cs
