This is a collection of essays in celebration of the Trust's centenary. The wide range of subjects embraced by the Trust (conservation, preservation, education, access for leisure, archaeology, natural history, landscape, the coast and countryside) are all reflected here. The work of the Trust in the past is considered and there is also an examination of the issues and challenges facing the Trust in the future. The essays featured are: Trusting the Trust - David Cannadine, Moore Collegiate Professor of History at Columbia University, New York; Conservation - Adrian Phillips, part-time Professor of Countryside and Environmental Planning, University of Wales; Sustainable Development and the Trust - David R Cope, Executive Director of the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development; The Coast - Keith Clayton, Emeritus Professor of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia; The Countryside - Philip Lowe, Duke of Northumberland Professor of Rural Economy at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne; Archaeology in Trust - Peter J Fowler, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne; Historic Buildings - Gerald Cadogan, archaeologist and journalist; Gardens - Anna Pavord, gardening author and correspondent; and 'The Next One Hundred Years' - Howard Newby.
