John and Sarah Churchill, the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, were one of the most influential and gifted couples in eighteenth-century England. John Churchill proved himself to be not only the greatest military commander of his time - his bravery and skill were legendary - but also a masterful diplomatist of remarkable charm in the service of both King William III and later Queen Anne.
His wife Sarah was no less a charismatic figure. Outrageous, quarrelsome, witty and manipulative, she used her influence over Queen Anne to ensure her husband remained in favour as well as to ensure that they became among the wealthiest couples in the land, building the magnificent Blenheim Palace in the process.
