Meanwhile, Demon X(A/N)th has been talked into a dangerous bet by the other demons. Handicapped by being disguised as a Dragon Ass - not a beast to inspire settlement - he must make the first person he meets shed a single innocent tear for grief or love for him. Unfortunately he makes contact with Chlorine, who has only one tear left and will become blind if she lets that one go. She's unlikely to shed her tear . . . and unless she does, Xanth is destined to die even if the hurricane spares it.
