In this must-read fantasy debut for 2018, enter the world of orcs - as you've never seen them before . . .

LIVE IN THE SADDLE, DIE ON THE HOG.

Jackal is proud to be a Grey Bastard, member of a sworn brotherhood of half-orcs. Unloved and unwanted in civilized society, the Bastards eke out a hard life in the desolate no-man's-land called the Lots, protecting frail and noble human civilization from invading bands of vicious full-blooded orcs.

But as Jackal is soon to learn, his pride may be misplaced. Because a dark secret lies at the heart of the Bastards' existence - one that reveals a horrifying truth behind humanity's tenuous peace with the orcs, and exposes a grave danger on the horizon.

On the heels of the ultimate betrayal, Jackal must scramble to stop a devastating invasion - even as he wonders where his true loyalties lie.

If you like your fantasy big, fun, crude, and macho, this is the book for you. And even if you think you don't, I'd recommend you give it a try anyway - The Grey Bastards is an outrageously entertaining romp, full of larger than life characters, amazing battle scenes, intrigue and advanture up to the ears. Gritty, hilarious, violent, sexy and - most of all - FUN. - Rebecca (QBD)

As a writer myself, I get a bit jealous of debut authors writing a cracking read, first up. And Jonathan French has just made that list. The Grey Bastards is a rough, at times brutal, fantasy told from the point of view of half-orcs, outcasts from human society and battling in the border lands against incursions of orcs and crazed centaurs (who are anything but the wise creature of classical mythology). One of the things I particularly liked was the way that French was able to introduce a new world, society and concepts with only a minimum of exposition. Instead he weaves it easily into dialogue and action – classic showing rather than telling. Fans of Joe Abercombie's earlier works will definitely enjoy The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French. - Ross (QBD)
