On a late summer's night, a young woman jumps in her car, her hands bloody as she grips the steering wheel. With her five-year-old son in the back seat, she flees to the only safe haven she knows: the island of Graskar outside of Fjallbacka, a place where her family has resided for generations.
Meanwhile, Detective Patrik Hedstrom has barely stepped foot inside his office following a lengthy sick leave when he is thrown headlong into a murder investigation.
A man has been found dead in his flat, shot through the back of his head. The victim, Mats Sverin, was the Fjallbacka council's financial director and nobody has a bad word to say against him. But when Patrik and his team start digging deeper into Mats's life, they uncover more and more unanswered questions. Why was he in such a rush to leave Gothenburg to return to his home town of Fjällbacka? And is it pure coincidence that Mats's childhood sweetheart Annie has also suddenly returned to the area?
It turns out that Mats visited Annie on Graskar before he died. Locally the island is known as Ghost Isle - they say that it's haunted by the dead. And that the dead have something to say to the living...
