When a five-year affair with her head of chambers comes to an end, Elinor swaps her barrister's wig and gown for a bikini, books, three weeks off work and jumps on a plane to LA. On the flight home she is seated next to a man who makes it on to the plane only seconds before take-off. They begin to talk, and she feels herself drawn to him despite his reluctance to reveal much of his past.

Back in London, Elinor returns to her job. Her first case is to defend a man charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend. The case is a difficult one, examining the definition of unwanted attention and the point at which infatuation becomes harassment.

Distracted, Elinor cannot stop thinking about the stranger from the plane. Then he calls, and so begins a passionate affair. But as the relationship develops, she finds herself caught up in a spiral of dark events, and the stalking she has refuted in court begins to cast a shadow over her private life . . .
