William James Mudie Larnach was one of the colony's leading businessmen and politicians, and builder of the famous `castle' on Otago peninsular. In 1891, after the death of two wives, he married the much younger Constance de Bathe Brandon, of a prominent Wellington legal and political family. However, the marriage that began with such happiness and promise ended in tragedy. Conny drew close to her husband's younger son, Douglas, and they became lovers. When William, already facing financial ruin, became aware of this intolerable situation, he committed suicide in the House of Parliament in October, 1898. This novel is the imaginative recreation of the experience of Conny and Douglas.
