Cara Landry was the kind of student who never stood out in school - that is, until she unveiled The Landry News, her own newspaper, in her fifth grade classroom.
In the first edition of the paper she writes a biting editorial about Mr. Larson, her teacher, who Cara feels isn't doing any teaching at all. Little does Cara know what effect her paper will have on Mr. Larson's career. When the principal gets wind of the article, he uses The Landry News as a means of getting Mr. Larson fired. But The Landry News takes on even greater significance as Cara and the rest of the class become embroiled in a town-wide debate about the First Amendment and just how much power a newspaper has.
