The medallion appeared at around four in the afternoon, when I was doing my homework. Maths homework, naturally, so it arrived at exactly the right time. It simply dropped out of thin air and landed on top of my algebra …
When she has finished her homework and read the relevant chapter in 'What to Do in the Event of Mysterious Events in the Home' ('Strange Jewellery: How to cope with it') Ana Beachcombe decides to use the medallion to travel to another world. She finds herself in the Land of Bad Fantasy, ruled by King Petrollium and currently embroiled in a war against the Western warlord and his army of lizard warriors. Ana finds three unlikely allies — an educated ogre, a were-canary, and a monster who is sensitive to light and allergic to blood — and together (successfully of course), they take on the enemy. Throw in magic swords, dragons, treachery and trickery, mistaken identity and a touch of romance, and you have a laid-back page-turner that seems more than a touch familiar, and is very, very funny.
