A formidably intelligent yet quiet Oxford graduate, Thomas lives in a rural village with his widowed sister and her two daughters. His life revolves around his family and his interest in philosophy until he receives his summons from the King. It is only once Thomas arrives, however, that he learns that his predecessor was murdered. Thomas begins his work deciphering letters and documents for the King but when his Oxford tutor is brutally murdered, he realises his new position has put him and those close to him in grave danger. And when a message is intercepted by the court, encrypted with an infamously unbreakable code, the pressure is on Thomas to work out who is behind the murders and the threat to the monarchy.
