Prosecuting Andrew Tripping for the assault of Paige Vallis is already hard enough for Assistant District Attorney Alexandra Cooper. No evidence, no forensics, it is the classic 'he said-she said' scenario that is so difficult to prove. Which is why Alex is pinning her hopes on Kevin Bessemer, Tripping's cellmate at Riker's, and Dulles, Tripping's ten-year-old son, who was in the house on the night in question.
But on the way from Riker's to meet Alex, Bessemer uses the situation to make good his escape. And interviewing Dulles is proving equally difficult: first the social workers won't let her see him; then, when the judge does grant Alex permission, Dulles disappears.
As the trial begins, a murder overtakes events inside the courtroom, and Alex is plunged into a race against time to discover the truth: a terrifying journey that ends up in the Kills, the eerie waterways along the coastline of New York's harbour . . .
