The crew of the 'Essex' have taken to the boats in mid-Pacific in pursuit of a whale, when another, huge whale rises from the sea and batters the 'Essex' into a sinking wreck. The men take to the small boats and set course for the American mainland. Three take their chances on an uninhabited island; the rest sail on. One by one they die of hunger. Three months later the captain, George Pollard, and one of his crew are rescued off the coast of Chile, four thousand miles from the site of the disaster. Pollard is devastated by the memory of his part in the tragedy, a memory that will haunt him forever.
